World’s Largest Cruise Ship, Icon of the Seas, Sets Sail From Galveston in 2027

Last Updated: November 23, 2025By

Royal Caribbean is set to make history in August 2027 when its record-shattering flagship, Icon of the Seas, begins departures from Galveston, Texas—marking the first time the world’s largest cruise ship will call the Lone Star State home. With a length of over 1,198 feet and a passenger capacity topping 7,600, Icon of the Seas is a floating city, equipped with never-before-seen amenities, innovative attractions, and endless dining, entertainment, and family experiences.

A Texas Gateway to Global Adventure

For Texas travelers, the arrival of Icon of the Seas is transformative. Fresh after debuting in Miami in early 2027, the ship heads to Galveston, where Royal Caribbean has invested in a new zero-energy terminal at Pier 10 specifically designed to handle the Icon-class vessel. This strategic move is part of Royal Caribbean’s ongoing Texas Gulf Coast expansion, which will also see Liberty of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas operating out of Galveston alongside Icon—making Galveston one of the top cruise ports in the U.S. by capacity and variety.

Guests can choose from an array of six- to eight-night Caribbean voyages, including stops at Perfect Day at CocoCay (Royal Caribbean’s private island), Roatan (Honduras), Cozumel and Costa Maya (Mexico), and the soon-to-debut Royal Beach Club in Cozumel. With bookings already open, demand is expected to be high—with prices for six- and eight-night sailings starting around $988 per person.

Icon’s Unmatched Onboard Experiences

Icon of the Seas redefines modern cruise luxury. The vast ship is divided into eight themed “neighborhoods,” catering to every traveler’s tastes and ages. Among its headline amenities:

  • Category 6 Waterpark: The biggest waterpark at sea, featuring six slides across multiple heights.

  • Seven Pools: Including the first-ever infinity pool at sea and signature swim-up bars.

  • The Ultimate Abyss: A jaw-dropping, 10-story dry slide for thrill seekers.

  • 40+ Dining and Entertainment Venues: From Jamie’s Italian to El Loco Fresh, plus Broadway-style theaters and jazz clubs.

  • Royal Promenade & Central Park: Stroll through green spaces filled with real trees, seasonal blooms, and open-air shopping.

  • Dedicated Family and Kids Zones: Splashaway Bay, Adventure Ocean, and social clubs ensure there’s fun for every age group.

  • Next-generation Staterooms: Multi-level suites, panoramic ocean views, and accessible options for families and couples.

Technology and sustainability set Icon apart: smart dining reservations, app-connected room controls, solar panels, and waste-reduction systems help create an eco-friendly voyage that marries luxury with responsibility.

Galveston’s Mega Expansion

The arrival of Icon of the Seas coincides with major upgrades at Galveston’s cruise port. Royal Caribbean’s 250,000-square-foot terminal was designed to accommodate the world’s largest ships, with advanced check-in, enhanced parking, and improved port security. Officials expect Galveston to become the South’s major cruise gateway, bringing in hundreds of millions in tourism and economic activity.

Port Director Rodger Rees calls the Icon’s homeport move “a historic milestone” for Galveston—enabling Texas families to embark on world-class cruises without flying or complicated travel logistics. With three Royal Caribbean mega-ships based in Galveston beginning 2027, the city’s coastal economy will benefit from increased hotel bookings, dining, and excursions that complement the cruise experience.

Texas Travelers: How To Book

Reservations for Icon of the Seas’ inaugural Galveston season are already open on Royal Caribbean’s website, with Crown & Anchor Society loyalty members receiving priority booking for the earliest sailings. Payment plans, room upgrades, and special cruise packages for multi-generational families make planning seamless. Icon’s Galveston itineraries are available into early 2028, offering plenty of flexibility for those looking ahead to milestone birthdays, anniversaries, reunions, or group travel.

What The Expansion Means For Cruising

Industry analysts see Royal Caribbean’s Texas investment as a game-changer—democratizing cruise luxury for a wider audience and cementing Galveston as a global port of call. Icon’s unprecedented size, amenities, and pricing mark a new era, while the addition of Liberty and Symphony of the Seas fuels local job creation, business growth, and tourism development.

Cruise pros emphasize Icon’s versatility: “It’s an adventure for thrill seekers, a paradise for relaxers, and an entertainment mecca for families,” said Royal Caribbean’s CEO Michael Bayley during the launch announcement.
