Explosion at Downtown Houston High-Rise Injures Multiple People
A significant explosion occurred on October 2, 2025, at a high-rise building under construction in downtown Houston near Daikin Park, resulting in at least five injuries.
Houston Fire Department officials reported the blast originated from a boiler explosion on the building’s 17th-floor boiler room, which caused a fire and partial collapse of the top floor.
The building, a Holiday Inn still under construction and scheduled to open in December, sustained visible exterior damage with portions of the facade buckled near the top. All injured individuals are believed to be construction workers, with several suffering burn injuries, including facial burns.
First responders quickly contained the fire, deploying Houston Fire Department HazMat teams as a precaution.
The incident led to significant road closures around the Texas Avenue and Austin Street intersection, with authorities advising the public to avoid the surrounding areas including Caroline, San Jacinto, and Austin streets.
The cause appears to be linked to a malfunction or failure in the boiler system, and investigations are ongoing. The explosion is a major disruption in the heart of downtown Houston, with safety, structural integrity, and recovery efforts the immediate priorities for officials and emergency crews.
